Data Engineer

This is an opportunity to lead architect, build, scale, and maintain a world-class analytics infrastructure that supports multiple LP digital businesses. This is a full-time position out of our Delray Beach office. Remote option may be available for the right candidate.

The successful candidate will be highly motivated to master their role. This is not “just” an engineering role, this is an entrepreneurial position that requires a combined passion for working with high volume data sets and understanding the marketing/product aspects of LP brands to help grow the business as a whole.

You must have at least 3 years of hands-on experience creating/maintaining ETL processes at scale and managing data warehouse solutions, with strong proficiency in Python and SQL.

THE ROLE - TL:DR

Launch Potato has several consumer-focused digital businesses that are supported by deep marketing analytics. You’ll be responsible for implementing engineering solutions that centralize this information and allow the analytics team to deliver world-class insights.

You’ll design and develop high-performance, fault-tolerant, secure, and scalable distributed data systems.

You’ll optimize existing ETL pipelines and create new ones that effectively manage our large data sets while learning the ins and outs of the businesses in which we are tracking user behavior.

You’ll centralize data in our data warehouse, create reports through data visualization tools like Looker, and proactively find new ways to improve the stability and speed of data pipelines.

As a digital marketing startup, Launch Potato relies on analytics that bring visibility and control to all teams, including marketing, product, analytics, engineering, social, customer service. You’ll interact with these teams to understand reporting requirements, then bring data from various data silos together into one effectively managed data warehouse.

By optimizing data models, you’ll enrich the team’s understanding of how we acquire users, how users engage, and how we can most quickly identify new opportunities to grow our businesses.

You’ll work with a variety of technologies on a day-to-day basis including Redshift, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, Elastic MapReduce (AWS), ElasticSearch,and Hadoop/Hive/Pig.

Projects will include managing data warehouse solutions, working with engineering to consume tracking data, and developing a flexible data model for unstructured data. You’ll add new features for more flexible management of jobs and optimize dependency structures.

You’ll stay updated on industry best practices, advocate for data quality, and ultimately grow and develop a team of data engineers.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Build and maintain various data stores

• Own the end-to-end data processing pipeline components in virtual and cloud-based environments for a variety of digital businesses

• Develop and maintain cross-platform ETL processes

• Maintain and enhance scalable web-based visualization tools (Looker)

• Routinely audit data loading process and monitor data anomalies

• Manage resource utilization optimizing instance sizing, storage capacity, and performance

• Develop and maintain third party API processes; work with third parties to get what we need

• Work with marketing team to QA all partners’ incoming data

• Optimize data modeling based on usage patterns

• Document structure and processes, never assuming certain intricacies aren’t important

• Perform routine maintenance on production database systems

• Work with engineering team members to review DDL, perform production database modifications, write stored procedures, and help optimize queries

• Enhance our existing database analysis and monitoring infrastructure

• Act as internal primary point of contact for all reporting requests

• Work closely with cross-department teams to keep data flowing and ensure the proper tracking and tools are used for new development

• Be responsible for reporting costs for data storage; work to keep costs as low as possible

• Perform ad hoc queries and data analysis requests as needed

• Grow and develop team of data engineers

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• Minimum: At least 3 years of hands-on experience in ETL engineering and managing data at scale, specifically with distributed systems

• Strong Python programming skills and experience

• Strong SQL skills and experience

• Passionate about database technologies

• Understands data normalization and how usage of such things can impact performance positively and negatively

• Strong Linux skills and experience

• Works well with others

• Understands basic marketing concepts

• CS degree or equivalent experience

• Is open to new technology choices but tempers such choices responsibly

• Extremely detail oriented

• Extremely resourceful and enjoys overcoming challenges

• Able to prioritize initiatives based on impact to business

• Thrives in a fast-paced environment and can balance multiple tasks simultaneously in a startup atmosphere

BONUS QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience with RedShift, Postgres

• Experience using a data visualization tool like Looker

• Experience with Snowplow tracking platform

• Experience with AWS

• Experience with machine-learning infrastructure

• Experience working at a startup

• Java programming skills

AVAILABILITY

Our normal team work hours are roughly 10am-5pm ET M-F. However, as a digital business you'll be expected to monitor throughout the week and on weekends as needed.

Additionally, we are a distributed digital team and there may be late/early meetings due to different time zones. We always try to work with everyone's schedules but at times there may be meetings earlier in the morning and later at night.
